Canada and Norway have many similar priorities in research and development (R&D). In addition to polar research, focus areas include environmental technology, aquaculture, biotechnology and energy.
Canada's Innovation Agenda
The Canadia Government has set 15 goals in connection with the implimentation of the Innovation Agenda. Goals include positioning Canada in the top 5 nations in the world for R&D by 2010, that the Government's funding for R&D is doubled by 2010, and that Canada is ranked amongst the world's best in terms of innovative products.

Canada Chairs
Canada has invested in attracting and retaining researchers through the creation of 2000 new chairs at universities throughout the country. Further investment in research facilities is linked to each chair, funded through the Canadian Foundation for Innovation. Funding has now been granted for a further 197 chairs.

NCE was launched in 1988 and now has an annual budget of C$77.4 million. The networks are made up from participants from universities, industry, government departments and NGOs. Since its foundation, NCE has created 97 companies and secured hundreds of patents.
